Hello! Welcome Back! I hope the new year has been treating you well! Today I want to talk about something special to me. It’s something I’m going through, something my friends are going through and it’s something I’m sure some of you are going through or have gone through. It’s about being in your early 20s and feeling like you aren’t where you’re suppose to be or more importantly the world telling you, you aren’t where you’re suppose to be.
There is a lot of pressure on young adults in their early 20s to graduate from college and almost instantly have it all figured out, too have a great full time job all lined up, to never move back in with mom and dad, to be able to pay all our bills and still have a great social life oh and let’s not forget all while being mentally and physically healthy but when that doesn’t happen we tend to get shamed… sometimes by ourselves, sometimes it’s by our friends, other times it’s by our family but no matter where we go or how much we try to just live our lives that shame of “you should have you’re life together” always follows us.
I’m currently 23 working in a retail job, 27 hours for 9 dollars an hour and I am constantly being told to “get a real job” by my family so I understand the shame of not having things figured out. My friend’s have it thrown in their faces by their families that they don’t have their life together. Social media is CONSTANTLY throwing it in our faces and making sure we know that people have their lives together and we don’t because we suck. We are being degraded because of where we are at in life and then feel guilty about it. It’s a vicious cycle that can be very hard to get out of and you know what, I think it’s all bullshit.
I was recently talking to my best friend about this same topic and we were discussing how no one but you can determine your path, no one can tell you where you’re suppose to be in life because it’s not their life or their path to figure out. I am a religious person so a lot of my beliefs about life have to do with God and while I respect that others may not feel this way, I believe that God has a plan for us. Just because you might not be what society considers as “successful” right now does not mean that you’re doomed forever to be a failure because you’re not. Let me reiterate that, YOU ARE NOT A FAILURE. As Miss. Taylor Swift once said
I get how hard it can be to find peace with where you’re at when you have so many voices telling you not to be, it can especially be hard at the start of a new year. You feel like you need to scrap everything from the year before and change your whole life in the blink of an eye, I’m here to tell you don’t listen to those voices. Listen to YOUR voice and YOUR heart, that’s what going to lead you down the right path. If you feel like you need a change then change absolutely but if you are happy with where you are right now because you know it’s not where you’re going to be forever… that’s okay too. In my eye’s what matters most is the memories you’ve made along the way, the people you’ve made those memories with and that you can say you’re happy with how your life turned out.
I can say I’m happy with the friends I have in my life, I’m happy with my job and at 23 that’s enough for me. I know in my heart that I’m going to be successful.. I feel it in my soul that even though I have no clue how it’s going to happen all my dreams are going to come true, but it’s going to happen on MY time, on God’s time and not on society’s time.
I hope this brought some comfort to anyone who is going through or has gone through this. I hope that if you have gone through this that you have made it out on the other side and that all your hopes and wildest dreams have come true and to those, like myself going through this…you’ll get there, we’ll get there. Have patience and enjoy your life because you only get one, try to not worry so much about where you should be and focus on the here and now because you never know when it’s going to be taken from you. As we all know from the tortoise and the hare, slow and steady wins the race. God Bless and until next time…
